Theodore Slotkin, Pharmacology and Cancer Biology

We are interested in how developing cells make decisions about their differentiation fate. Studies are conducted at a variety of levels, from molecular biological events controlling cell replication and differentiation, through the determination of cell fate, and where the nervous system is concerned, synapse formation and physiological function. Ongoing projects for trainees comprise three areas: (1) the role of endocrine and neurotrophic factors in gene expression by developing neurons; (2) effects of drugs of abuse (especially nicotine), environmental contaminants (especially pesticides) and hormonal imbalances on brain cell development; (3) pharmacotherapies of preterm labor and their effects on brain development.
